2024.5.29. Seattle Convention Center Summit Building + Amy Tan

5/29, Wednesday. 3pm tour of the new Summit Building of Seattle Convention Center. I was interested in this building after attending last year's Structure Engineer Fall Forum which showcased the Summit Building. Only about 7 people today. The first level is open to public, which doesn't seem to get any use. There's a security guard at this level. The Hill Climb is not accessible from this ground level. It's really nice. The cushion is pink and green of rhodadendron, WA's state flower. Lot of natural light. Spacious corridors. Large exhibition hall with dividers. VIP rooms next to the top floor of the ballroom with dedicated elevator (we didn't get to see) Very nice roof garden, at level 3, with ripen strawberry, which is left to rot on the vine. Not sure why birds don't eat them. I tasted a few, quite good. This building has the LEED platium status. Reuse of some panels of the Honda dealer which used to be in this location. Lot of art work throughout as well as next to the building from local artists. The signs of each level (1 to 5) are unique. The door panel to the ballroom as well as the celling is made of these worm woods. The carpet is of this bizaar pattern of mostly burgundy color. You can spill as much wine and food on the floor without noticing.

7pm, Elliot Bay Books and Seattle Public Library hosts Amy Tan's book tour for her new book Backyard Bird Chronicles with notes and drawing by the author herself. Many years ago, Amy Tan did her very first author reading event for her first book the Joy Luck Club here in Seattle at Elliot Bay Books. Today, of course, is one of her many readings since then. She looks great for a 72 yo. Spoke clearly and confidently. She said she was surprised by the reception of this "diary". Her drawing is definitely amazing for someone who started learning to draw only a few years ago at this advanced age. Her birds are from her own backyard, which, frome the photos she showed, looks beautiful and large. She has keen eyes of observing bird behavior. I enjoyed her talk. A good turnout: the auditorium in the library is 80-90% full. She pre-signed the books, so not mingling with readers (she got COVID once from a reading event). According to Rick of Elliot Bay Books, the first print of this book is already out of print. Next batch will be in July.
