2024.5.30-6.2, Glazer Camera's 15th Annual PhotoFest

5/30, Thursday evening. The Collective hosts the opening talk and demo of this weekend's PhotoFest. The talk is by Scott Robert Lim, a Sony Ambassador. He's here to promote Sony's Global Shutter, the first true electronic global shutter in camera. During the demo, he uses 2 flashlights (in softbox) and gel and fog, and 2 kickbox models. He also chatted about how he started, and answered questions. Seems quite affable.

6/1, Saturday. I was at The Collective almost all day, briefly at Glazer's. Among the classes I attended, I liked:
  • Meg Loeks (SIGMA and Lightroom Ambassador), on composition and color, often with studio light and post processing. Demo with 2 kids and 2 lights in softbox. Her photos of domestic life has a dreaming quality.
  • John Greengo, on tips of photographing on a boat (check out shooting locations, paths to get there), a panga (be friendly with your driver, wait till slower speeds, carry less gear, clothing for all weather).
  • Erin Babnik (Canon Explorer of Lights, on using extreme tele/macro focal lengths for landscape.
  • Lee Hoy (OM System Ambassador), on birds in flight. He is very entertaining and highly opinionated. His tips are: do not worry about high ISO (use DXO PureRaw to get rid of noice later), preparation (camera setting, location) and anticipation.
  • Dan Hawk (Sony rep), on everything, including podcast (F Stop Collaborate and Listen) and apps (e.g. Photo Ephemeris, Photo Pills), using Google Earth, tripod selection ...
Also stopped briefly in talks on Tiffen Filters, taking videos, camera settings, color management of your monitor and printer. There are many photo walks scheduled during this weekend, which I didn't go. Overall, learned a lot and inspired to take better photos. I still do NOT want to buy a camera: too many options. Mostly because I don't want to add weight to my backpack.
