2006.6.1. Central California. Day 2 of 7.

Mono Lake 's south Tufa state reserve ($3, 5 miles on 120 east of 395) has the largest clusters of towering tufas -- limestone deposits formed by underground spring.

One mile north of this connection is a pleasant detour winding past Grant, Silver, Gull, and June Lake. Quite a few vacation homes along this June Lake Loop.

Mammoth Lakes basin is home to a few ski slopes still in operation. Close by roads lead to several alpine lakes like this Twin Lake (all others are closed to car access for now due to the still snowy road).

Hwy 108 crosses the Sierra over Senora Pass at 9628 ft, just north of Yosemite (Hwy 120, Tioga Road, in Yosemite is not yet open). Quite scenic.
