12/11 Saturday. Bus to Mani doesn't have late afternoon returns (except for Sunday). So I took the first bus out. 5:30am. Ticket booth closed. Paid the driver, no receipt. 65 peso. Only 6 people. Departed on time. Thanks to the emptiness and slowness, I was able to sleep. Lots of people got off in Mama.
8:15 arrival, 5 min late. The bus visited every little towns near the route. Amazing how the driver maneuvers the bus on narrow streets, sometimes in two way traffic. Maní is another "magic town". Convento de San Miguel Arcángel occupies most of the town center. Large manicured ground. Quite pretty. Mani is infamous, being the location where
on 1562 July 12th, Friar Diego de Landa, held an inquisitional ceremony, burning a number of Maya hieroglyphic books and a reported 5000 idols.
Walked to the cenote, close by, closed. Also walked to "U Naajil Yuum K'iin", a bit far, and not worthwhile, not a nice walk either. I didn't get to see anything, because I want to catch the same bus on its return from Oxkutzcab (15 minutes away), and the site wouldn't open until 9.
The 8:45 return bus is 15 min late. 40 peso to Telchaquullo (schedule is 10am arrival). On the way, saw horse gathering in Tekit. The bus is getting later and later. At 10:15 I was drpped off by the hwy, opposite of the entrance to Mayapán, just before Telchaquullo.
Mayapán is small, but has a good concentration of structures. It's a short walk from the highway. There's a strange round building.
A lot of columns. Not too many people. 50 pesos. Clean bathroom. You can climb almost all structures. Great view from the top.
Walked to the town of Techaquilla. Maybe 1 mile. At the turn to Pixya, I asked a boy on motorcycle, there are a few of these moto-taxis going back and forth. He wants 70 pesos. He doesn't know any of the 3 cenotes I wrote down: Nah-Yah, Su-hem, Noh-Mozon. Two of them are very close.
The lady at the comisa called a motortaxi. The boy driver complained how far Noh Mozon is, many times. It took us 50 minutes. The 5km to Pixya is only 10min, the rest is on bad road, maybe only 4km very bumpy ride. My phone fell out of my pocket once, have to stop the boy. He went and picked it up. A guy collects MXN50 half a mile before the cenote. Raised a makeshift log bar, and waved us in.
This cenote is another world. Large and deep. Very beautiful. My photo doesn't do the justice. A group of French divers in 2 minivans. A couple in a sedan. The stairs are unstable. No life jacket or rope. Saw 1 fish. This is maybe my favorite cenote.
I told the boy that I don't want to go to other cenotes. He's quite happy. Took us 45 min to get back. 2:09pm. The Sur bus is scheduled to arrive here at 2:15. The lady and the boy watched out any collectivos for me. A Tekit to Merida bike group arrived in shiny raspberry colored shirt. Some used the rest room here. So I did too. No paper. Free.
14:25pm one for Merida arrived. MSN30 (sign says unique price 48). Less stops. 1.5 hour. Stoppes on the corner of c50 x c69, south of Parroquia Nuestra Senora Guadalupe. Bought some food in the market. Ran out of cash.
