5/1, Saturday, 40% precipitation. I was picked up at P&R at 8 by today's organizer J. 3 others met us at Oxbow Loop TH parking on Middle Fork Snoqualmie Road. Walked back to Bessemer Rd, and on to it. Yes, it's a road walk, almost entirely. Around 3000' we encountered snow. We were sinking a little, one of us didn't bother with snowshoes. I did put mine on later, not totally needed.
Bessemer Mountain
The ~first mile reaches a junction with Big Blowout Creek and CCC trail. The next mile zigzag by a tributory of BBC many times. It washed out the road at various places, see this flattened pipe.
It started to drizzle. C bailed out soon after. Yes, a bit too boring, plus the lousy weather. I cut one corner by going straight up the snowy slope, a bit too steep, so didn't attemp it again. The two other ladies continued. One is fit, but wearing a pair of shoes with holes (in snow!). Her friend is slower. We all had to wait for her. Eventually, less than a mile from the summit, they turned around. J and I pushed on. By then, it was snowing lightly. I missed the last turn of the road in the fog, followed some faint footprints. The last ~20' feet were steep. We made to the top. Quite spacious. There were some rocks to sit on. J kindly waited for me to finish my sandwich, in snow. No view whatsoever. On a clear day, the view should be quite good: no obstruction.
Well, about halfway down the mountain, it cleared up. Could see the mountains across Middle Fork Snoqualmie River. As we approached the parking lot, the two ladies' jeep was just pulling out. Exchanged greetings.
A work-out, at least. Nice folks to chat with.
