Sunday, sunny. Started from an obscure pullout on Hwy 35, followed #480 as it gradually climbs for ~2 miles to our first viewpoint, and then ~0.5 mile relatively flat to Gumjuwac Saddle, where you see this funny signpost.
From here, snow starts. We took #458 but had trouble walking on the icy trail. Fooled by the warm winter, none of us brought any tracking device. Scrambling uphill is easier: less snow and soft. We continued the rocky viewpoint, where we had a long lunch. Lots of snow here, splendid view 360°: St Helen, Rainier, Adams to the north; Hood due west; Jefferson, the Sisters and more to southwest.
We continued in snow further east to the Lookout Mountain itself, where the foundation of a lookout can be found. Equally excellent 360° view. Now we can see Badger Lake SW, and the desert east. Possible to the the Flagpole Lookout. After more photos, we followed footprints north down to High Prairie. Can see Hood, St Helen, and Adams here, but not at the same time. This is a parking lot in summer, equipped with an outhouse (no more toilet paper now). We took the old road back to Gunjuwac Saddle. Then snow free to the car. Close to the TH, Zach showed us a side trail which leads to a camp spot, for partying and shooting.
As with most male organizers, Zach budgets time for beer and dinner. We stopped at Hood River. Tried Solstice and Pfriem along the waterfront, recommended by the team, both required 30-45 minutes wait. So, we ate at Full Sail. I didn't get home until after 10pm. Total 11 miles, maybe 3000', 5 hikers.
