Saturday. Fog in the morning. Sunny later. Warm, high in the 60s (F), but chilly in the shade. We walked from Indian Beach (in Ecola State Park) to Oceanside and back. 2 years ago, I did a one way hike with a different group from the north end (in Oceanside, where a proper sign is posted), and extended this hike to Ecola viewpoint, and further to Crescent Beach. That's a better option if you can arrange for car shuttle, because it's prettier.
Total ~12 miles RT, 7 hikers. Muddy trail even now (exceptional dry weather this winter). According to Sullivan, William Clark noted "I behold the grandest and most pleasing prospect which my eyes ever surveyed." upon seeing a viewpoint along this headland. We spent most of hike looking for such a view, with no avail. The closest I came across is the photo here. It requires a bit bushwacking.
~1.5 miles from Indian Beach, or 4 miles from Oceanside TH, is a backpack camp, with plenty huts, and some WWII bunkers. Right there, a side trail due west to an overlook for the Tillamook Rock lighthouse: it's floating in the fog. The rest of the trail isn't interesting. There're a few big dead trunks. See the rest of the group here. After reaching the northern end, we decided to walk to the cove to have lunch: watching local surfers.
Ironically, the best looking point along the whole trail is where we started: Indian Beach, now that the sun has finally broken the fog. Some surfers here too. We walked down to the beach before driving back home.
We stopped at Camp 18, at Elsie for an early dinner. Large portion, so so quality. Fat customers. Log construction, stuffed animal heads, the central customer service desk is one single hollowed tree trunk.
