2017.5.5-7 Southern Oregon + Redwoods

5/5, Friday. Similar trajectory to last year's trip in April. Left work early to avoid traffic and headed south. First stop at Willow Creek Preserve outside of Eugene. Camas in full bloom. Mixed with some death camas,
and lomatium. This time, we also checked out its southern part, less camas, more buttercup, and found this beautiful mariposa lily, maybe Monterey Mariposa Lily.

Drove back to I-5 via country roads. Saw this winery up a gentle hill, top with a castle and a big parking lot. Sheep lazy around among the vines. Very pretty. I've never heard of their wine though.

Before checking into an AirBnb for the day in the Medford area, hiked up Lower Table Rock. Tons of Blue Dick, Rosy Plectritis, Pussy Ear. The top of the rock is a sea of pink and white. It's a magical place. Still a sizable pond left. Not many lupines this year. Sun was setting. Colorful sky, but too cloudy to see McLoughlin. No one else.

5/6, Saturday. Overcast. Went to Agate Reservoir to have a picnic breakfast, so not to disturb our host and her two rabbits. This weekend happens to be a float plane festival on the lake. Lots of old dudes with many model planes.

The impetus of this weekend trip is the guided walk at Cascade Foothill of city of Ashland, organized by Southern Oregon Land Conservancy. About a dozen people showed up. The hike leader Christie is the botanist in house. Very enthusiastic and articulates clearly. Apart from local news, I learned some new flowers:
European Corn-salad (yes, edible, but a bit tough), a bedstraw variety with big leaves and pink flower, Round-leaved Filaree (rare), Blow-wives, Showy Phlox, Waterleave Phacelia. The ring on the hill in the back of the photo is a lavender labyrinth for an addiction rehab.

On the way to the coast, like last year, stopped by Eight Dollar Mountain for the boardwalk to see California Pitcher Plant. More in flower this time. Also some some Oregon Rockcress, Flat-stem Onion, Common Camas, more Showy Phlox, and Yellowleaf Iris here. Then walked in Rough and Ready Wayside, a botanic gem. I saw some Purple Mouse Ears (new to me), Barestem Lomatium, Larkspur.

Jedediah Smith State Park is on the way, and is my favorite section of the Redwoods, especially the drive on Howland Hill Rd, still full of pot holes. Did the short loop at Stout Grove, and in and out on Boy Scott trail (blocked at 1.5 mile). Very similar, just the former has more people. I like the drive more than the hike.

Camped at Harris Beach. Just in time to walk to the north beach for the sunset. All the site with view have electric hookup. Luckily that one hookup didn't work (23A), so that is the one. Bathroom has warm water, and shower (didn't use it). Fairly clean.

5/7, Sunday. Southern Oregon coast has the most amazing sea stacks, and gorgeous seascape. Harris Beach is one of the gems. Walked to the beach in the blue sky. Wind starts to pick up.

Hiked from Pistol River to Crook Point, like last year. Terribly windy. Southward wind. On the way back, I had to walk backwards from time to time so I could breathe, as well as to reduce the amount of sand hitting my face: it was painful. View is splendid, but no panoramic photos, as I wasn't able to hold my camera steady. Again, no one else around, except at the parking lot, saw a lady with a black dog. She called the wind "nasty".

Just a bit north is Myer Creek area. There're multiple ocean side pullovers to admire the view and/or go down to the beach. Lupine on sandy hill.

Next, hiked 5.5 miles lollipop loop to the top of Humbug Mountain, the highest on Oregon coast, 1700' elevation gain. That was after a late lunch and nap at its picnic area to the south of the trailhead. Quite a few old growth trees, maidenhair fern, Oregon Myrtle. No view to speak of, even at the very top (has a bench there). You have to peak through trees to glimpse at the coastline. I didn't take a single photo here.

Visited Port Orford Heads, by the light house. It was so windy that I pretty much stayed inside the car. Wind blowed the incoming wave out, so much so that the spray was creating little ephemeral rainbows.

Walked about at Coquille Point. Decided to buy some beer and wait for sunset. Quite a lot of birds on those sea stacks. Forgot binocular. Still very windy.

It's 4.5 hours to drive home. Arrive after 1am.
