2022.3.24. Cherry blossom at UW

3/24, Thursday, lunch time. I headed to UW's cherry quad to enjoy the annual blossom. It's always a delight to see the cherry blossom here. A lot of people today, warm, partly sunny.

2022.3.20. Celebrate Asia at Benaroya

3/20, Sunday, 4pm. Celebrate Asia at Benaroya Hall. I received an email before the concert saying that we are welcome starting at 2:30pm. There'd be performance before and after the concert. I didn't arrive until after 3:30pm, while a dragon dance was going on. After the concert, a drumming troupe.

The first piece is meditating over Fukushima disaster. Least melodic. 2nd one is US premiere. I didn't get the video game in the title. According to the program note, the 3 movements are muses of Bili, Xiqin, Sheng. Nothing sounds like any of these 3 Chinese ancient instruments. Why trombone? Also the arrangement sometimes buried the trombone in the orchestration. Kala Ramnath's violin concerto is interesting, more melodic. A world premier, commissioned by Seattle Symphony. She sat on a wooden box in beautiful sari when playing, and singing. Not much dynamic, sounds more like wailing, instead of singing. As for Debussy, according to the conductor, it's because of the ocean theme of today's concert. I'm sure Debussy's ocean is not the Pacific. Still, I'm glad to have come, to support the local arts community, and relex. Saw quite some nice traditional clothes in the audience. The auditorium was about 80% full.

2022.3.13. Teanage Dick at Seattle Rep

A modern and satirical take on Shakespear's Richard III. In Teenage Dick, at a high school of 2010, bullied for his cerebral palsy, Richard plots his revenge as well as a glorious and ambitious plan to win senior class president. As he falls deeper into political turmoil, Richard is faced with an unexpected choice. Is it better to be loved or feared?

2022.3.12. Jolly Mountain snowshoe

3/12, Saturday, cloudy. Rain was in the forecast. My overnight trip was postponed. I joined a day hike to Jolly Mountain. Had a bit of mist on the way. Weather turned out to be quite good east side of the Cascades. We had total of 13 people + 1 dog.

Snow right from the parking lot off WA-903. My first real hike in months. Don't have the hiking legs any more. We followed NFD-4315, cut off some of the zigzag until out of forest. Some of these cutoffs were very steep. From then out, it's on the ridge with open views. Beautiful winter wonderland. I put snowshoes on.

I was in the second batch we reached the summit, quite slower than those ahead. We all made it. The last person got there ~15 minutes after me. I was the "photographer", since I don't want to be in the photo. The view is excellent. On the way down, we glissade a sections. I hit a snag of broken tree in the snow, got a big gash on my butt, and my pants had 2 large holes.

About 12-13 miles, 4200'. The group went to 2 restaurants in Cle Elum, first about to close (9pm). I don't eat indoors, so stayed out in the car. At least no one would see the holes on my pants.

2022.3.5. Another Sunny Day in Vancouver

3/5, Saturday, my last full day in Vancouver. Blue sky. So went to downtown again.
Changed bus in front of Science World. So walked a bit along False Creek before getting on the bus. Very pleasant. A few joggers, and tourists.

Winter is not the best time to visit QE park. Lots of dead plants. Noticeble are the few giant rhubarb plants, dead of course. Good view at this viewpoint, because it's on a hill. I always loved this ensemble of sculptures. The detail of everyone's expression and clothing is meticulous.

Afterwards, we took another bus to Burnaby's Central Park. Walked to both upper and lower ponds. Ducks, fish (carp?). Pleasant. Saw a small band of Asian senior citizen playing waltz.
