2025.4.26. Whale Peak

4/26, Saturday, up at 4am, didn't make breakfast, ate something in the dark, because I had a guest sleeping in the living room. Forgot to take my lunch from the fridge, as I was rushing to meet my ride and his 3-yo dog. I had to walk half an hour to be picked up, so we can arrive at the meeting location at 5am (too early for public transit).

The La Rush Lake TH is at a sharp bend of FR1550, which is overgrown and a bit rough. We drove slowly in a car without a good clearance. At one point (both directions), I had to get out to direct the driver through 2 large rocks on either side. The view is outstanding from here. Elevation 3200'. A camp remnant here, with an empty can of beer (we packed it out on our way out).

We started our hike shortly after 8am. A short trail leads to a small lake. A nicely "constructed" camp by the lake. However, seems will be too buggy very soon. Maybe okay when it's frozen. The trail is a bit overgrown, with down trees uncleared. But there are red flags directing you to go around the obstacles. Supprising for such an obscure trail. The trail goes to Bear Lake, about 3700'. Even smaller, not thawed yet. Maybe it is just a swamp.

From then on, no more trail. Keep about the same elevation, going around a ridge. A lot of blow downs.

After crossing this creek (~10:55am), started gaining elevation.

Soon, the view opened up, and is getting better and better. Another pond. We went on the left ridge. A couple of easy-to-avoid cornices along the way.

~noon, I had to request a stop to refuel. Reached the summit ~1:20pm. ~6500'. I was famished. One of my legs had some cramp. The summit is narrow but long and flat, with cornice on the west side. Stunning view, especially to the Granite Lakes below to the west. So many peaks around. As usualy with R's trip, we stayed at the summit for almost an hour. Surprisingly calm (no wind).

Back the same way. Reached the car at 6pm. Driving back with a gas stop. I was dropped off at a closer I-5 exist. 20 minutes walking home. Almost 10pm. A long but fulfilling day. About 9 miles, 3100'.
