2011.10.31-11.2 SE Africa (part 2/8) - Botswana

US$ 1 = BWP 7.
Chobe National Park.

Day 7, Oct.31, Monday. ~24°C. Rained in the morning.

The new group showed up ~8:15am (1 hour late), and another hour was wasted to change the trailer 1. The bus was filled to the rim.

Bought a convertor at our breakfast stop. Botswana also uses South African plug.

2 lane country road all the way with speed limit at 100Km/hr. Saw a monkey, 2 giraffes, and a number of warthogs by the road. Flat countryside, dry thin forest.

Reached Botswana border ~3:30pm just north of Limpopo River. Vehicle and bag search. No fruits or meats (except chicken) are allowed to cross between these two countries.

Crossed the Tropic of Capricorn.

Arrived at Elephant Sands 2 at ~10pm after about 900 cramped kilometers. Excellent dinner was served at the restaurant (the best during my 5 weeks in Africa). No shower: elephant broke the water pipe! The property has no fence. Elephants came in the night to drink from the pond and sometimes from the swimming pool. Lots of sand: our truck got stuck for awhile.

Day 8, Nov.1, Tuesday. Close to 40°.

Already hot at breakfast ~7am. ~10am, one tire blew up. A South African truck pulled over immediately to help with their fancy jack.

Elephants by the road.

Arrived at Thebes River Safari lodge 3 around noon. After putting up the tents, we were given 2 options for the afternoon in Chobe National park. Most of us opted for a river cruise, and it was simply lovely!

Many boats run along Chobe River around Sedudu Island. Hippos turn and squirt in the water, elephants wade through water, a herd of ~500 buffaloes, Red Lechwe. So many and so close. Tigerfish jump in the wake, African Darter, Openbill Stork, Fish Eagle, all with reflections over the shimmering water as the sun set.

Dinner @8pm back in camp: beef stew with rice.

Day 9, Nov.2, Wednesday. ~30°
Morning game drive in Chobe. Already 9 Land-rovers at the gate at 5:50am! Sandy road, unpaved. Taller trees than in Kruger. More elephant, buffalo. New species in wild: Sable Antelope, Banded Mongoose, wild dogs, Yellow-billed Stork, Corey Bustard. Saw lions twice, once with part of a killed buffalo.

Depart for Zimbabwe.
