2005.11.17. Seattle Symphony with Andreas Haefliger at piano.
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58
  • Bruckner: Symphony No. 7 in E major
Bruckner's symphony is powerful. Big assemble: 30 violins, 8 bases and a large wind presence. The concert master is a new face.

2005.11.10. Seattle Symphony. Conducted by Jun Märkl.
  • Gabriela Lena Frank: Manchay Tiempo
  • Beethoven: Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15
  • Brahms: Symphony No. 1 in C minor, Op. 15
This Beethoven piece sounds very Mozart to me. The pianist Benjamin Hochman is still a boy, very promising. There's also a short premier by a girl younger than me. It was about a dream and the Peruvian conflict in the 80s. She also talked about her trips in South America before the concert.

2005.11.06 UW opera "Tartuffe" at Meany Studio Theater. Music and libretto by Kirke Mechem, based on a play by Moliere. The theater is too small for an opera. Very good acting. Music is pleasant, but not memorable. Sung in English, no supertitle, so missed most of what was said.

Vassily Sinaisky, conductor
Xavier Phillips, cello (1710 Matteo Gofriller)
  • Prokofiev: Sinfonia concertante for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 125
  • Rachmaninoff: Symphony No. 2 in E minor, Op. 27
2005.11.1 Sweeney Todd at the 5th Ave Theater. Music and Lyrics by Stephen Sondheim. Very timely performance. Quite funny for the morbid subject. Carol Swarbrick who played Mrs Lovett, the meat pie maker, is awesome.
